Imagining what comes next, I start by going to the river. A well known path, but this time starting from a new neighborhood. 11,47 km by bike from La Chacarita neighborhood to the water. Rio de la Plata, where a shore cannot be seen from the other shore. A coast built out of demolition debris from the city highway construction. An odd ecological reserve. A place to breath, almost falling off the city.

A small street located in St. Hanshaugen, Oslo. Original buildings are from the early 1800s with the wooden houses preserved until today. Little alleys, narrow streets and stairs run in between.

When in Oslo I always make sure to make a trip to this street, often with friends. In this street we hide away from the bustle of everyday life. The appearances of the old wooden houses give us a sense of something rooted in history; still here, still a place where people live. Something as fluid as the idea of a home that stays solid trough time. The street seems almost out of place the way it curves narrowly down the hill like a secret river, sheltered from the rest of the city. Now, it shelters us from the rest of the city.

We enjoy discovering this street anew every time. Here I had a discussion with a friend about to what extent one can allow oneself to look into people’s windows. I went with privacy and discretion. Perhaps the result of growing up as a Southerner. My friend didn’t see any problem glancing and looking onto people’s kitchen tables, coffee corners and home office spaces. It confuzzled and amused me. A daydream warped and soaked in nostalgia. The soft spot for wallowing is tickled here and we roll around in it like gleeful piglets tricking ourselves with such pleasure. But then we make the decision to take the few steps that are needed; home, to a part time job, a rehearsal, to questions about what to make for dinner etc, and we’re good, we’re fine and all that.

It reads: Perhaps we should be quiet. – Word. Written on the foundation of one of the houses.

Brest, Francia.

Vallon du Stang Alar está diseñado con pequeños senderos que a veces revelan espacios abiertos. Fui allí originalmente buscando un banco para iniciar mi coreografía, en su lugar encontré un sitio rodeado de árboles grandes y una estación de ejercicio para saltos laterales. El sitio capturó mi atención por varios motivos;

In search of an urban space

I knew right away that I wanted to find an urban site surrounded by woods for this project. I feel very close to the forest.  Having grown up in Trondheim, Norway, I could practically enter the forest from the front door of our house.

I’m in love with the light that exists in the forest; The darkness made by the trees and the light that searches its way through the leaves. It’s magical and familiar. Safe and frightening at the same time.

Since I moved to Brest in France I have lived in the center of the city. There are cars and asphalt surrounding the brick building that I live in. There are no wild forests surrounding the city, but big public parks. The park in my video is called the Vallon du Stang Alar (the valley of Stang Alar).

The Vallon du Stang Alar consists of small paths that sometimes reveal open spaces. I went there, originally looking for a bench to start my choreography. Instead I found a site surrounded by big and chunky trees, and an exercise station for lateral jumps. The site captured my attention in several ways;

- It was hidden so I could feel safe that there would not be many people passing by. I somehow felt that I needed some privacy in the process.

- The site had visually interesting information with the repetitive forms of the exercise station and the unruly, wild forms of the trees.

- The site gave me information to play with and motivation to move between the exercise station, the empty space on the left side and the bushes on the right side.

Moving

In “Lateral” I try to connect the constructed and the natural, jumping forth and back from one to the other. I let my movement habits co-exist with the new information provided by the site. The dance is conducted by, but also breaking free from the surroundings.

In my dance practice I am interested in working with the weight of my body, shifting and directing my weight in different directions. As weight is an integrated element in how I move, it was natural to reuse this element in the project.

The linear form of the exercise station captured my instant interest, as they stand out from their surroundings. Since my first position was laying down, it was natural to use one of the tilting wood structures. From where I was laying I could see the top of the bushes, which gave me another motivation to move. This as a starting point initiated a choreographic task; imitating the existing forms and using the existing objects on the site. As a contrast to the linear and symmetric forms of the exercise station the trees contain wilderness and chaos. With branches and leaves growing in all directions the trees do not follow any symmetric structure. Still, the trees also have linear forms. Therefore, I chose to combine chaos and lines to create contrasts in the movement material.

Lateral as an adjective means to the side.

Lateral as a verb means to move oneself or something in a lateral direction.

Historical info of the Vallon du Stang Alar

The Vallon du Stang Alar is located in the municipality of Guipavas, close to the city of  Brest in France. Stang Alar extends over 40 hectares and is a green museum that consist of a public park and a botanical garden.

This site was for a long time enjoyed by the residents of Brest as a place to play or walk before it  gradually degraded.

Mining activity significantly changed the site. It was for a long time used to supply water to Brest, but it was forgotten in favor of the river Elorn in the late nineteenth century. Abandoned, the Stang Alar became a dumping ground.

From 1971, through the efforts of resident associations and supported by institutions like the Urban Community of Brest, the Stang- Alar was reborn. In 1975, the idea of a botanical conservatory “for threatened plants" was born and in the early 80s, the work to develop the park began.

Now fully refurbished, the Vallon du Stang Alar has one of the most prestigious Botanical Conservatories in the world and a beautiful public park.
